Check-list for intermodal users

  • Does the nearest terminal have an appropriate service offer and if not, can it be established in terms of required connection, travel time, time-slots for pre- and on-carriage, frequency, loading profile? (see also Intermodal Terminals)
  • Are the transport flows in balance, regular, sporadic, seasonal?
  • Can the company handle intermodal transports in organizational terms at all?
  • Is intermodal equipment already available? Shall/can it be rented or leased? Is special equipment necessary?
  • Shall the organization of both pre- and on-carriage be done alone or together with a partner? Shall/can own trucks be used or a subcontractor (trucking company)?
  • Is the transport and service quality sufficient and fulfills own and the customers’ requirements, e.g. in terms of punctuality, reliability, tracking, customer information?
  • Are appropriate rules on liability, e.g. in case of delays, offered?
  • Does the use of intermodal transport have by-pass advantages, e.g. of driving bans, limited tonnages, regular congestions, driving time regulations?
  • Does it fulfill the requirement of “sustainable logistics” set by shippers?
